What is treatment-resistant depression (TRD)?

TRD means you've tried two or more different antidepressant medications at adequate doses and for an adequate duration, but they haven't significantly improved your depression symptoms.

Is Spravato the same as ketamine?

No. While both Spravato and ketamine affect the NMDA receptor, they are not the same. Spravato is a specific form of ketamine (esketamine) that has been developed and approved by the FDA for treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation or behavior. The delivery method, dosage, and monitoring procedures are also different. Ketamine is not FDA approved for the treatment of depression and is used "off-label" when prescribed for mental health conditions. This means its use is not under the same level of regulatory control as Spravato.

What is Spravato (esketamine)?

Spravato is a nasal spray medication, used in conjunction with an oral antidepressant, for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). It is also approved for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) with suicidal ideation or behavior.

How does Spravato work?

Spravato works differently than traditional antidepressants. It targets a different receptor in the brain, the NMDA receptor, and is believed to help regulate glutamate, a brain chemical involved in mood. This different mechanism may lead to faster symptom relief for some individuals.
